Father Time History
*SPOILER WARNING*
You are welcome to read the history of the story before reading the actual story, but it may take away some surprises and hint at future stories. If you want the full effect of the tale, I suggest you read it first and then the history of how it came into existence ...
* When I first sat down to write
this tale, the beginning opened similarly to how this one ends (and the next
one begins). Basically, Doc calls Marty as in the beginning of this tale and when
Marty gets there, explains how Clara, Jules and Verne have accidentally
disappeared to a time in the past. They left a note for Doc in a previously
decided location (as he instructed) explaining where the train was buried and
where they are. This tale was probably going to end up being more similar to
what will become my second story, but I wanted to do something original with
Jules and Verne to make the characters my own, thus I decided to put the brakes
on that story and begin my BttF Fan Fic with this one.
* Began writing 1/16/03
* The original begining had Marty
with a cell phone he never knew he had (because of the new 1985) and included a
comment about how Marty was worried he'd be finding out new things about his
life even when he was an old man. I didn't go willy-nilly throwing in devices
that don't exist. According to web sites I visited, cell phones were around in
the 80's, but apparently not in wide public use. I scrapped the beginning and
exchanged it for the one you now can read because of a comment on the Back to
the Future DVDs. Now if Bob Gale or Neil Canton didn't have cell phones back
then, I doubt Marty would. I decided to put Marty's brother into the new intro
as a sort of foreshadowing of Jules and Verne and to keep the whole family
theme present.
* 1/28/03 - Chapter IV was
re-edited, leading the story in slightly different direction for the next two
chapters. This expanded the adventures in 2020 and is what first brought the
orphanage into the story which becomes a recurring theme, especially for Jules
and Verne. The main reason it was altered was because I didn't like where
Chapter VII was going (basically nowhere). I gave up on that chapter midway
through it and decided to take a different approach.

* The original ending to
this story isn't the one you see now. I liked the concept (which is why it was
reproduced for the next tale) but it seemed too forced, especially the
accidental time trip at the end.
